Although he was declined, it was not long before he would be back. In 1952 he joined BBC full time becoming a producer for the Talks Department, which dealt with all non-fiction broadcasts.
His association with history programs began when he produced a three-part series titled The Pattern of Animals. After a few years of declining an offer and eventually quitting to study for a postgraduate degree in social anthropology, he eventually came back to BBC.
Fast forward to 1979 and you will find the beginning of one of the greatest natural history series ever to be made, Life on Earth. Attenborough and his crew were able to film Dian Fossey’s research group of mountain gorillas. In all, the innovation of the new film-making techniques is what separated the series from anything ever done before.
Five years after Life on Earth, The Living Planet was created because of the success of Life on Earth. This too had a great deal of success which lead to the final piece of the original “Life” trilogy, The Trials of Life.
The 90’s brought even more documentaries and amazing pieces. But nobody could have predicted his best work was still to come. Attenborough was asked to narrate The Blue Planet in 2001, which became the Unit’s first comprehensive series on marine life. The same team then put together the biggest nature documentary ever to be made for TV, The Planet Earth series.
If that was not enough, Attenborough went on to write and narrate Life in 2009, which is a ten-part series that focuses on animal behavior. And to this day he is producing further work for the world to marvel over.
